The Pilgrims will be looking to keep hold of two of their top stars this summer

  • Dan Scarr's potential move to Birmingham City could strengthen Plymouth's defense for the next campaign.

The Pilgrims maintained their Championship status on the final day of the previous campaign, with Joe Edwards’ header sealing the deal in a final-day victory over Hull City.

Since then, Wayne Rooney has been installed as the Greens’ boss, with the Devon outfit looking to kick on with the former Manchester United man at the helm.

Not allowing their key personnel to walk out the door will be key to any success in the 12 months to come, with interest building in some of their prized assets already this summer.

It was announced last week that a number of top clubs around Europe are chasing Morgan Whittaker, with the former Swansea City man said to be wanted by Premier League duo Brentford and Wolves.

Celta Vigo, Stuttgart and Lazio are also reportedly after the left-footed forward, who netted 19 times in the Championship for the Home Park side in the previous campaign.

While it is no surprise to see top clubs come in for him after his stellar campaign in a green shirt, Rooney will be determined to keep hold of his key attacking outlet beyond the end of August, with much of what Argyle did well in the final third coming through their £1 million recruit.

This isn’t the first time that the Devon side have had to field offers for their star man, with Brentford once again fielding an interest back in January alongside West London neighbours Fulham, although any advances were rebuffed that time around.

The Pilgrims are said to be holding out for £15 million if any club is going to prise Whittaker away from Home Park this summer, which would be the highest fee ever received for an Argyle player, and by some distance.

But keeping hold of him would prove invaluable ahead of the 24/25 campaign, with the ex-Derby County man proving he can win games almost single-handedly at times throughout the previous season, with 27 goal contributions to his name.

1 Dan Scarr

Colossal centre-back Dan Scarr is said to be of interest to League One side Birmingham City this summer, with the Blues looking to heavily invest in their attempts to get out of the third tier at the first time of asking.

Despite falling out of favour during Ian Foster’s miserable time in the dugout at Home Park, Scarr still featured in 28 Championship matches for the Pilgrims last season, with his recall to the side largely helping to keep the Greens in the division.

With three clean sheets in the final six matches of the season, Scarr outlined his influence on the Argyle backline, as he stood firm alongside the man-mountain Lewis Gibson to keep some of the Football League’s top talent at bay.

Although his ability with the ball at his feet may be limited at times, the centre-back should be kept at the club beyond the summer, as he can add plenty of steel to the defensive unit.

A return to having three central defenders brought the best out of the side as their second tier status was on the line, and Scarr would offer plenty alongside Gibson once again in the next campaign, with the likes of Brendan Galloway and Julio Pleguezuelo also vying for a starting berth.
