Liverpool’s pursuit of silverware continues with renewed energy as the club lines up reinforcements in key areas. With the transfer window in full swing, attention has now turned to strengthening the No. 9 position — an area that proved inconsistent last season.
Following a title-winning campaign, Liverpool have already made a flurry of additions. Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Armin Pecsi, and Freddie Woodman have joined the ranks under new head coach Arne Slot. However, movement in the attacking department appears imminent, particularly with doubts surrounding the impact of Darwin Núñez and Diogo Jota.
One of the most compelling names under consideration is Hugo Ekitike. The French striker enjoyed a breakout season with Eintracht Frankfurt and has been under Liverpool’s watch since the window opened.
According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Ekitike ranks high on the Merseyside club’s shortlist:
“Liverpool are currently focusing on three concrete options in their search for a new number 9: Hugo Ekitike, Alexander Isak, and Victor Osimhen,” Plettenberg wrote on X.“Liverpool have conducted thorough checks and gathered information on all of them. Ekitike, for example, is very high on the list. The French striker knows that if he moves to Liverpool, he will need to be patient because the club must sell players first.”
Despite the need to balance incomings with outgoings, Ekitike’s profile — pace, flair, and youth — fits with Liverpool’s forward-thinking recruitment model.

Interest in Alexander Isak is understood to be strongest among the trio. The Newcastle United forward has been monitored closely, with Liverpool staff impressed by his movement, composure in front of goal and tactical intelligence.
However, the Sweden international’s valuation remains a significant stumbling block. Newcastle are reportedly unwilling to sell, especially to a direct Premier League rival. Despite this, Liverpool’s interest remains active.
Reports suggest the player is open to a move:
“Isak himself is keen on leaving Newcastle, and Liverpool is said to be an ideal destination for him.”
Isak’s potential switch to Anfield could hinge on player desire as much as club negotiations. The 24-year-old scored 21 league goals last season and is viewed internally as a ready-made solution to Liverpool’s attacking concerns.
Victor Osimhen, meanwhile, represents the marquee name among Liverpool’s targets. The Nigerian forward is expected to depart Napoli this summer, with Saudi Arabian interest making headlines. While Liverpool’s links to Osimhen are more speculative, the player’s pedigree and explosive ability make him a name worth watching.
Osimhen scored 17 Serie A goals last term and would bring proven firepower to Slot’s setup. His availability hinges largely on price and player preference, with Napoli known for their tough negotiation stance.
Though not Liverpool’s primary target, should other deals stall, Osimhen could become a realistic option — particularly if the Reds decide to make a late move for a statement signing.
Slot’s desire for a new striker underlines a tactical shift. While Darwin Núñez and Diogo Jota offered moments of quality, neither provided the consistency needed to lead a title defence. The manager is reportedly seeking a reliable focal point who can combine goals with off-the-ball discipline.
In Ekitike, Isak, and Osimhen, Liverpool have identified three very different profiles — each with qualities to shape the side’s identity going forward. Much will depend on availability, negotiation leverage and the club’s ability to offload fringe players.
As the window progresses, Liverpool fans can expect further updates — and potentially, a new No. 9 who could redefine the club’s attacking future.
