Following Burnley’s relegation to the Championship, there is expected to be a number of changes at the club.

Phil Bardsley joined the Clarets in 2017 but the 36-year-old has seen his game time dry in the last two seasons making four league appearances last season and none this season.

Bardsley is out of contract this summer and his departure from the club looks set to happen with his wife all but confirming this was the case on Instagram as she posted a picture of the family at Turf Moor accompanied by the caption: “A very emotional day yesterday [Sunday] it was our last day there just wish it could of ended on a high. Thank you to every1 at Burnley, the fans the staff the player the wives every single one of you are just amazing the loveliest people ever thank you for some amazing years, sad to see this chapter end.”

This comes after Bardsley was linked with a move to Derby County who are managed by his former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney.

As Burnley’s time in the Premier League comes to an end, this looks like a done departure as the defender seeks game time whilst Burnley focus on gaining promotion back to the top flight on the first time of asking.

The Verdict:

There are a number of players out of contract this season at Burnley and it’s not a surprise to see Bardsley as one of the departing names.

Whilst people such as his teammate James Tarkowski will be eyeing a move back up to the Premier League, for the 36-year-old a step down seems to be the right move if he is seeking for game time.

As Derby County search for a return to the Championship, Rooney is keen to add some more experienced heads to his squad and he knows Bardsley well enough to know what he will add both on and off the pitch.

The defender will be disappointed his time at Turf Moor didn’t end on a brighter note but it seems as though the first of quite a few changes coming at the club.
