Manchester United played the best part of an hour against Young Boys with 10 men as they got their Champions League campaign underway. After a promising start to the Premier League, a far more challenging proposition would present itself in Bern.

The spectacular Cristiano Ronaldo gave Manchester United the lead after just 13 minutes, slotting in at the back post after a stunning pass from Bruno Fernandes.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side looked comfortable in the game but that would all change when a dangerous tackle from Aaron Wan-Bissaka resulted in his dismissal. The hosts equalised shortly after the hour-mark and stole all three points in the dying embers of the game.

David de Gea – 6 Can’t be blamed for either goal.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 1 Poor first touch before getting himself sent off. Poor challenge and put his team on the backfoot.

Victor Lindelof – 5.5 An OK outing for the returning Swede.

Harry Maguire – 6 Most of the pressure was on the captain as Young Boys took control of the game and he did fairly well.

Luke Shaw – 5 Mostly poor – should not have allowed the cross to come in for the equaliser.

Fred – 7 Back in the side after being omitted against Newcastle and he did well with all things considered.

Donny van de Beek – 5 It could’ve been the night he was dreaming of but instead he was substituted at half-time. Didn’t do too much at either end of the pitch.

Jadon Sancho – 6 The unfortunate casualty of Wan-Bissaka’s red card. Looked sharp in instances but played just over half an hour.

Paul Pogba – 7 The only player capable of keeping it in possession after the interval.

Bruno Fernandes – 8 A mouthwatering assist and never stopped running after the red card. A leader’s performance. Substituted with roughly 20 minutes to go.

Cristiano Ronaldo – 7 Another game, another goal – it’s simply what he does. Substituted later with potentially one eye on this weekend’s fixture at West Ham.

Substitutes Diogo Dalot – 5 On for the dismissed Wan-Bissaka and had nothing but defending to do for 45 minutes. Missed several opportunities to keep the ball.

Raphael Varane – 5 Solskjaer made the switch to three-at-the-back for the second half, with Varane taking up the central role. The Frenchman struggled as United were pegged back.

Jesse Lingard – 2 The 28-year-old was energetic but his backpass in the last minute of the game proved to be fatal. United had weathered the storm and it looked like they were returning to Old Trafford with a point. Instead, Lingard’s pass, aimed for De Gea, was far too loose and the hosts took all the bragging rights.

Nemanja Matic & Anthony Martial – N/A None of the above-mentioned players had enough time to influence the game.
