Newcastle United turned up the tempo early at St James’ Park and never let Chelsea settle. In a fixture thick with top-five implications, it was Eddie Howe’s side who imposed themselves from the first whistle. Sandro Tonali’s early opener gave Newcastle the edge, and from there, they managed the match with a maturity that reflected their recent European ambitions.
Chelsea struggled to cope with Newcastle’s press and structure. Though Robert Sanchez had little to do in the Chelsea goal, the hosts’ superior organisation and intensity dictated the rhythm of the game.
Harvey Barnes and Bruno Guimaraes had half-chances to double the lead before half-time, while Dan Burn came closest, heading narrowly wide. But Chelsea’s chances took a decisive blow when Nicolas Jackson received a red card for thrusting a forearm into Sven Botman – a moment that gave Newcastle even more control.

To their credit, Enzo Maresca’s side responded well after the break. Despite going down to ten men, Chelsea played their best football in the second half, carving out openings and keeping the game alive. Marc Cucurella’s fierce drive required a fine stop from Nick Pope, while Reece James – introduced at the interval – headed a glorious chance wide in the closing stages.
That miss proved costly. Soon after, Bruno Guimaraes let fly from range and a deflection left Sanchez stranded. It was a decisive blow, sealing three points for the home side and condemning Chelsea to defeat in a match they simply couldn’t afford to lose.
Newcastle’s performance wasn’t flamboyant, but it was controlled. They didn’t need to take risks. They played with the kind of balance and purpose that teams chasing Champions League places are often built on.
For Chelsea, the match summed up a campaign too often derailed by indiscipline and inconsistency. Jackson’s dismissal turned a manageable task into a desperate one, and while they rallied in spells, Newcastle always looked the more assured side.
With the win, Newcastle climb into third place and edge closer to securing a top-five finish – one that could be enough for Champions League football depending on English clubs’ European performances. Chelsea, meanwhile, now risk slipping out of the top five and will be relying on other results to stay in contention.
