Netherlands suffer to the hands of Argentina once again to penalties in the World Cup despite coming back from two goals down in normal time in Qatar. Oranje’s hope of getting revenge against Argentina was alive and well thanks to Wout Weghorst’s late brace from the bench including a last-minute equaliser deep into injury-time.

However, it was not enough as Louis van Gaal’s side bow out of the knockout stages to penalties against the South American side – similar to what happened in 2014. It will not be the fairytale ending Van Gaal was looking for but the match had plenty of drama that will leave people talking about this match for a while with notable performances from Frenkie de Jong, Teun Koopmeiners and Weghorst.

Denzel Dumfries, 6 – Was set up by Marcos Acuna for Argentina to win the penalty and the Inter Milan defender fell right into the trap with the tackle. He very rarely falls foul of that so it was surprising to see happen plus he was limited going forward with the ball – if he ever could.

Frenkie de Jong, 7 – It started slowly for De Jong but the midfielder found his groove late on in the match which made a huge difference as Oranje got the two goals needed to take it to extra-time. He read Argentina’s press well and his passing was on point.

Cody Gakpo, 5 – Was seen as Oranje;s main threat and Argentina set themselves out to limit any impact he had with the 23-year-old unable to play his own game. Tactical fouls and hard pressing from the opponents

Steven Bergwijn, 5

Memphis Depay, 5 – He will be left feeling frustrated and could have offered a lot more going forward. Oranje did not frustrate Argentina’s defence enough to stake a claim of a semi-final place and would have looked towards Depay to change things up but nothing came before he was subbed off by Weghorst – who did find the net.

Marcos Acuna, 7 – Should not have been subbed off. Frustrated Dumfries throughout the match and was the reason the Inter Milan defender had a quiet game before Acuna’s number came up on the substitute board.

Lionel Messi, 8 – A brilliant performance once again from the captain. A wonderful assist to give Argentina the lead before converting the penalty to double their lead may not have been enough to see of the match after 90 minutes but the threat he possessed in extra-time as well will be a warning for their upcoming opponents.
