Ligue 1 Uber Eats, Round 34, 19/05/24

AS Monaco swept FC Nantes aside (4-0) in a comfortable victory on the final day of the season in what was an inconsequential match in the Ligue 1 standings.

There was a tranquil and festive feel around the Stade Louis II pre-match. With UEFA Champions League football already assured, this was a match without consequence for both sides, with Nantes also having secured their safety. Les Monégasques’ Ultras were also celebrating their 30th birthday on the night, meaning that football took a backseat role.

However, in the festive atmosphere, Monaco put on an attacking festival in the first half, racing into a 3-0 lead before the 25-minute mark. Wissam Ben Yedder opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a close-range finish before Thilo Kehrer, whose move to Monaco became permanent on Friday, doubled the Principality club’s advantage with a header.

Nico Pallois’ rash challenge on Eliesse Ben Seghir then offered Monaco the chance to go three up in just the 23rd minute. Mohamed Camara made no mistake with his finish, netting his first for the club. Folarin Balogun, in need of a goal, almost added a fourth before the half-hour mark but his shot on the turn struck the foot of the post.

With pride on the line, there was something of a response from Nantes, who straightened up defensively – to an extent. Monaco did get their fourth, however, early in the second half through Eliesse Ben Seghir, who rifled past Alban Lafont into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Nantes never looked like pushing for a consolation and as the game neared its conclusion, Monaco seemed content to just keep their opponents at arms length, as they did comfortably.

Monaco player ratings

Radosław Majecki – 6

Soungoutou Magassa – 6

Mohamed Salisu – 6

Thilo Kehrer – 7

The perfect way to celebrate joining Monaco on a permanent deal. A calm, composed and error-free defensive performance and a goal to top it off.

Caio Henrique – 6

Mohamed Camara – 5

Mamadou Coulibaly – 5

A relatively discrete performance from the academy product, who was replaced with an injury at half-time by another Diagonale academy product, Saïmon Bouabré (6), who was making his debut for his formative club. A tricky box-to-box midfielder, he made a positive showing, operating well in tight spaces. He has stated his case for more minutes next season.

Krépin Diatta – 5

Eliesse Ben Seghir – 7

A mixed performance from Ben Seghir, whose match was marked by a good goal and some eye-catching carries, but also a series of poor final passes and a lack of awareness of when to release the ball at times.

Folarin Balogun – 5

Wissam Ben Yedder – 6
