The Premier League schedule entered the Christmas period with a tantalizing midweek encounter at St James Park.

Caoimhin Kelleher – 5.0

The Irish backup stopper started this game once more, as the Reds await the return of their Brazilian no.1, Alisson Becker. The impressive keeper was needed on a number of occasions in the first half and could do nothing to stop the opening goal soar into the top corner.

After the intermission, the 25-year-old was unable to stop the second goal as his defensive group let him down. The third Newcastle goal was a horrible moment where he failed to deal with a deep cross.

Jarell Quansah – 6.0

Quansah came into the starting line up after his impressive cameo performance against Manchester City. From the outset the towering presence was unsure positionally and offered very little going forward.

Following the halftime break, the academy graduate was a little flat footed for the second goal as he failed to get goal side, however, he was better when moved into the middle.

Andy Robertson – 6.0

The Scotland international skipper was unable to impact the first half in an underwhelming period.

In the second half of this game, the popular fullback committed in his work as he tried to force the issue.

Joe Gomez – 5.0

Gomez was both good and bad in equal measures, as he struggled to get to grips with the counter attack of the hosts.

After the break, the former Charlton man was unable to stop the second goal squeezing in as he struggled to make the vital last ditch challenge.

Virgil van Dijk – 6.0

The captain and leader of this team was a little off his game in the first half as he struggled to keep up his recent form.

After the break, the 33-year-old Anfield legend was more proactive and vocal as he pushed his teammates forwards.

Ryan Gravenberch – 5.0

The Duch midfielder was largely ineffective in the first half and could not impose his game against an opponent that was well drilled.

As the encounter resumed, the 6ft 3inch midfielder was unable to muster the levels required before leaving the pitch.

Alexis Mac Allister – 7.0

The Argentina World Cup winner started this game with gusto and had two good chances to open the scoring.

After the halftime team talk the midfielder was instrumental in creating patterns of play to get his team back into the game.

Curtis Jones – 7.0

Jones started slowly as the space to create failed to avail itself.

After the intermission, the academy graduate was able to equalize with a fine effort inside the penalty box and his energy was key in getting his team back into the game.

Darwin Núñez – 5.0

The Uruguayan striker was at times sporadic in his work as his effort could not transmit to the required level of skill.

As the game resumed, the output of the former Porto man was urgent, however, he was unable to show a clinical edge in front of goal.

Cody Gakpo – 5.0

The Dutch forward started from the left wing with a desire to cut in and challenge from wide, with little coming to fruition.

After the restart, the former PSV man was slightly better before leaving the field with his team in deficit.

Mohamed Salah – 9.0

The Egyptian King was instrumental in creating the first goal and scored the second when his manager needed something. The shackles were released when Trent entered the field and he was able to implement a comeback with his desire, before smashing the bar at 2-2 with a great solo effort. His second goal was exceptional and again showed his wonderful ability.

Came on to add some unpredictability.

Dominik Szoboszlai – 6.0 (on 66)

Came on to add urgency.

Trent Alexander Arnold – 9.0 (on 66)

Came on to assist the equalizer before again laying on the third goal.

The Manager;

Arne Slot – 6.0

The Dutch manager was keen to shuffle the pack to meet the occasion, however, his starting line-up lacked drive in the first half.

All the substitutions were effective and well-timed.
