MARSEILLE – 2 (Payet 33, 45+3)

Pau López, 4 – Ponderous in possession – supposedly his ability with his feet is why he’s been preferred to Mandanda – and was very lucky not to allow Kalimuendo in to score with one horrible touch in the first half.

William Saliba, 2 – Worryingly far less decisive both on the ball and in defending than in recent games. It was his naïve pass – one of many – that led to the penalty and he was lazy in covering Said’s run for 3-2.

Luan Peres, 4

Mattéo Guendouzi, 3 – Too restrained in his role as often the only Marseille central midfielder at times in the second half and became increasingly frustrated. Passing radar was off and was unable to impose himself on a well-drilled Lens midfield. Outplayed throughout by Fofana.

Gerson, 3 – Virtually anonymous as the game passed him by. Often seems to play a gear below everyone else.

Pape Gueye, 2 – Withdrawn at half time having clumsily conceded the penalty. His passing was woeful throughout the first period.

Valentin Rongier, 4

Cengiz Ünder, 6 – Often a threat from wide areas and slammed a shot off the bar in the second half.

Bamba Dieng, 5 – Not able to pull the Lens defence around as he did to Rennes last week and headed his only real chance right at Leca when he should have scored, did force the penalty however.

Dimitri Payet, 8 – Faded a little in the second half but kept OM in the game with a lovely, shaped free kick before calmly converting the penalty, his passing was glorious at times.

LENS – 3 (Sotoca 9, Frankowski 27, Saïd 71)

Jean-Louis Leca, 7 – Commanding around his area and made who brilliant saves, one close range from Gerson and another down low to his right from Dieng’s header.

Jonathan Gradit, 6

Christopher Wooh, 5 – It was a silly, rash tackle to concede the penalty but he made up for it in the second half with some key interceptions.

Facundo Medina, 5

Przemysław Frankowski, 7 – No Clauss, no problem. A more than able outlet on the right flank for Lens, having added real balance from the left this season, and scored the goal of the game with a left-footed curling effort from the corner of the area.

Deiver Machado, 5

Seko Fofana, 9 – Unreal. Affected the game with seemingly every touch of the ball, a persistent danger in progressing the play on the counter with power and pace, very tough to dispossess, and used possession astutely throughout as a key threat and creative influence for Lens.

David Costa, 4

Arnaud Kalimuendo, 5

Florian Sotoca, 8 – Outstanding. Showed a steady hand to slot home the penalty and then provided two clever assists. Firstly, a flicked header to put Frankowski away for 2-0 and then a pinpoint whipped cross for Saïd to head home for 3-2.
