Inter recorded a historic first win ever over Barcelona in a Champions League group stage match thanks to a 1-0 win at a boiling Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in Milan’s San Siro district.

The Nerazzurri approached the match as expected defending in low blocks but above all defended and acted like a team from the first to the last minute.

Hakan Calhanoglu scored the only goal of the game in the second added minute at the end of the first half, shooting low into the bottom corner following a move started thanks to Man Of The Match, Federico Dimarco.

André Onana – 6,5: Decent to good outing by the Cameroonian international. Commanded area well except when making an error which led to a goal but was correctly called off by the VAR.

Milan Skriniar – 7.5: Finally Inter’s unofficial captain had the armband all Nerazzurri fans have demanded he have for years. Outstanding defensively barely putting a foot wrong in defence. Leader.

Stefan de Vrij – 7,5: What a performance by the Dutchman. Played like at his peak in 2018/2019 season. Completely nullified and erased Robert Lewandowski from the match. Came off with a knock which hopefully isn’t serious.

Alessandro Bastoni – 6,5: Starting to look and act like the player that was a pillar of Conte’s Scudetto winning side, in both phases. Still making a little bit too many simple errors but definitely on the right track.

Matteo Darmian – 7: The most loyal team player in the squad. Gave everything he had and then some for the shirt, the team and the cause. Worked his socks off until there wasn’t an ounce of energy left in his body coming off with cramps.

Nicolo Barella – 7: Best performance of the season by the Italian international midfielder. Ran, fought and battled like when at his best but lacked the final touch in attack misplacing simple passes after doing the hard part right.

Hakan Calhanoglu – 7: Good performance by the Turkish international replacing Brozovic. Made a few mistakes that could have proven costly but redeemed himself by scoring the winner and fighting for the cause.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 6,5: Calm and cool with the ball as well as a safe passer. Benefited from the lack of intensity and struggled when the same was raised but relied on his routine to not put himself in bad situations.

Federico Dimarco – 8: Gave the kind of performance he must have dreamt of doing one day when as a child cheering his beloved Inter on from the stands on San Siro’s North Curve. MOTM.

Joaquin Correa – 6: Provided defensive shape simply by being on the pitch but offered nothing in attack as he doesn’t seem to understand that football is a contact sport and he is allowed to both tackle and be tackled.

Lautaro Martinez – 6,5: Clearly he isn’t fully fit as whatever injury he felt after Roma loss didn’t allow him to move about the pitch with the same ease he usually does. Worked really hard but nowhere near as effective in attack as usually is.

Edin Dzeko – 6: Brought on in the 57th minute for Joaquin Correa to hold up the ball and alleviate pressure with varying degrees of success. Always works hard, always leads by example but his legs can’t do it anymore.

Denzel Dumfries – 6: Came on for an exhausted Dimarco in the 76th minute. Provided a good cross which Dzeko almost got on the end of but will mostly be remembered for the controversy where he almost gave away a penalty.

Francesco Acerbi – 6: Replaced Stefan de Vrij in the 77th minute who came off after feeling a knock and did what he needed to do without much fuss. Provided that extra reinforcement in the air when Barcelona where bombarding Inter’s penalty area with crosses.

Robin Gosens – 6: Substituted Matteo Darmian in the 77th minute who came off with what looked like cramps. Solid defensively and his physical presence helped Inter battle for and win the ball.

Kristjan Asllani – N/A: Was brought on in the 85th minute for Hakan Calhanoglu and didn’t play long enough to be able to be rated.

Simone Inzaghi – 8: Got every single decision right, from the game plan, the tactics, balance to the substitutions. Players clearly still behind him as they executed his orders to the letter.

Slavko Vincic – 7: Good performance keeping a consistent level throughout. Was maybe let down by the VAR to Inter’s joy but conversely VAR didn’t give a penalty to Inter for what looked like a very tight offside call.

Inter – 7,5: The kind of performance that you can build a successful season off the back of. Cohesive, organized, structured, high concentration and mentally very strong. Not out of the woods yet but a fantastic start.
