Hansi Flick called for a response against England following their 1-0 defeat against Hungary on Friday night. Although Die Mannschaft dominated possession, the opening 45 minutes was a rather drab affair. Gareth Southgate’s side looked to cause problems on the break but Marc-André ter Stegen made two excellent saves to deny Raheem Sterling. With four changes against England, this was an excellent opportunity for Flick to get a better understanding of his squad ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

Ilkay Gündogan gave Germany the lead after Harry Maguire brought down Jamal Musiala, who was excellent on the night. Kai Havertz then doubled their lead but defensive errors allowed England to get back into the game through Luke Shaw and Mason Mount. Harry Kane then gave the Three Lions a 3-2 lead from the spot after 83 minutes. Havertz scored a second with a long range effort to secure a point.

An improved second-half and certainly a better performance than against Hungary but ultimately, there’s still plenty of tweaking that Flick and his coaching staff need to do ahead of the World Cup.

How the Germans fared

Marc-André ter Stegen, 8 – Made a couple of good saves against Raheem Sterling in the first half. Won’t start at the World Cup unless there’s an injury to Manuel Neuer, but another good performance by the Barcelona stopper. Kept the scoreline down. Also composed with the ball at his feet and offered a good passing range.

Thilo Kehrer, 6

Niklas Süle, 7

Nico Schlotterbeck, 4 – In five games for Germany, the Borussia Dortmund defender has given away three penalties. Still has plenty to learn at this level.

David Raum, 5

Joshua Kimmich, 6

Ilkay Gündogan, 7

Jonas Hofmann, 5 – Much more suited to an attacking role. Made some good runs forward and played some excellent balls into the box but without a classic No. 9, there’s no aerial threat.

Jamal Musiala, 8 – Awarded a start at Wembley by Hansi Flick and he didn’t disappoint. Won the penalty, Germany’s first of the evening and proved troublesome for Harry Maguire and the England defence throughout. With one of Ilkay Gündogan or Leon Goretzka playing alongside Joshua Kimmich, it’s likely that Musiala will start in an attacking role, which suits his play. Always looked to create going forward.

Leroy Sané, 6

Kai Havertz, 8 – A brace for the Chelsea player against England. Offers a goal threat and becomes the first player since Oliver Bierhoff to score a brace for Germany at Wembley. If Hansi Flick doesn’t call-up a typical No. 9 for the World Cup, Havertz could be a solution.
