A Maximilian Beier brace in three minutes secured Hoffenheim a famous 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund on at the Westfalenstadion on Sunday afternoon. The Sinsheim side went 2-1 down despite leading after three minutes, but fought back magnificently.

Emre Can, deputising for Mats Hummels in central defence alongside Nico Schlotterbeck, was at fault for Hoffenheim’s opening goal after failing to close down Ihlas Bebou, who lashed a shot behind Alexander Meyer from close range.

Borussia Dortmund would then take a 2-1 lead after 25 minutes with quickfire goals from Donyell Malen and Nico Schlotterbeck, both assisted by Marco Reus.

Beier then scored his first of the afternoon from distance, via a Schlotterbeck deflection to put the ball beyond a stricken Meyer before TSG took the lead minutes later. Playing through Dortmund’s central areas, Anton Stach found Beier, who placed himself ahead of Julian Ryerson, to put his side in the lead.

It’s the third time that Borussia Dortmund had taken the lead and failed to win. And not only that, upon the full-time whistle, boos rang out around the Westfalenstadion, with fans clearly disgruntled at BVB’s failure to close the gap to Bayern Munich and Stuttgart after they both dropped points this weekend.

It was also a game that Dortmund dominated, beating Hoffenheim in several key statistics. Jadon Sancho and Co. created more clear chances, had more touches in the opposition box, and dominated possession. But as has been the case for much of the season, they’ve been unable to turn their ball possession into dominating performances.
