Bayer Leverkusen left the BayArena frustrated as they could have easily left with three points as they drew 1-1 with Borussia Dortmund.
The first half was completely dominated by Leverkusen but they went in at half-time 1-0 down after an early goal from Julian Ryerson gave Dortmund the lead. Leverkusen would continually dominate the ball but were not able to break down Dortmund’s low block. Florian Wirtz thought he had equalised for Leverkusen just before half-time but the goal would be ruled out as Victor Boniface was offside in the buildup.
In the second half, Leverkusen continued to dominate the game but Dortmund were unable to hold them off until the 79th minute when Patrik Schick squared the ball to Victor Boniface to allow the Nigerian to convert.
Overall, Leverkusen remain top but they would have felt that they deserved more from this game against a rather poor Dortmund side.
Lukas Hradecky – 5
Odilon Kossounou – 7- Not only key in Leverkusen’s build-up during the game, the Ivorian was also important in defence several times showing his prowess to easily end any attempted Dortmund counterattackers. Kossounou played the key pass into Schick who would then square the ball to Boniface for the goal.
The 22-year-old is important to Leverkusen’s system as not only does he cover for Jeremie Frimpong but he also can step up into midfield and sometimes even further forward.
Jonathan Tah – 6
Edmond Tapsoba – 6
Jeremie Frimpong – 6
Granit Xhaka – 6
Exequiel Palacios – 6
Alex Grimaldo – 6
Jonas Hofmann – 5
Florian Wirtz – 6
Victor Boniface – 7 – A frustrating evening for Boniface but he was able to end his goal Bundesliga goal drought with the equaliser.
Others: Amine Adli (5), Patrik Schick (6)
Gregor Kobel – 6
Marius Wolf – 5
Mats Hummels – 8 – Dortmund’s best defender this evening in a game where they were consistently put under pressure. Without the 34-year-old, Dortmund probably end up conceding more than the one goal they did. Throughout the game, Hummels would either make a key tackle or would do a small act that would disrupt Leverkusen’s attack.
Nico Schlotterbeck – 6
Julian Ryerson – 6
Emre Can – 5
Marcel Sabitzer – 5
Marco Reus – 5
Julian Brandt – 5
Jamie Bynoe-Gittens – 5
Niclas Füllkrug – 5
Others: Antonios Papadopoulos (6), Karim Adeyemi (5), Thomas Meunier (-)
