Argentina picked up a massive win against Mexico to ensure their stay in the competition despite facing some tough times.

The Albiceleste had a rather poor first half in a performance that lacked cohesion in midfield and they failed to break Mexico down. But goals from Lionel Messi and substitute Enzo Fernandez in the second half saw them through, as they broke down a stubborn Mexico defences with two instances of magic.

Key performers

Lionel Messi, 8: The PSG star was often having to play deep in midfield due to the lack of progression from that part of the pitch. But he still performed that role and was in the right place in the advanced areas too. For someone who is now aging, that is quite a feat and to score that spectacular goal when his team truly needed it was memorable. It was a performance that will be remembered for a while.

Rodrigo de Paul, 3: It was another poor performance from the ex-Udinese man, who was probably not helped by Guido Rodriguez and the poor pairing they form. But De Paul couldn’t help in ball progression and added nothing to the play, making it a clear cut case for why he should definitely be dropped for the next game against Poland.
