Barrow forward Luke James has agreed to have his contract mutually terminated with the club in order to join National League outfit York City.

The 27 year old, formerly of Hartlepool and Bristol Rovers, joined the club back in July 2020 and has made 69 appearances for the club, scoring 3 times and becoming a prominent fixture in the side. However towards the end of last season his opportunities began to dry up, and he was limited to mainly sporadic substitute appearances under Phil Brown, who has of course subsequently left the club and been replaced by former Halifax gaffer Pete Wild.

The reaction from Barrow fans was somewhat mixed, with the general consensus being that he is an industrious player that is lacking in quality, especially in the final third, However would succeed at his new club in the division below.

The club spoke on the matter stating ‘we would like to thank Luke for all he has done in a Barrow shirt and wish him all the best in the future’ with new club York City delighted to have their man, with supporters branding him ‘the man to help us to back to back promotions’

The Verdict

James is a hard working forward, who is technically limited however knows his limits and can be very effective in the right system, Barrow will not miss him massively, as they are looking to push up the League Two table under an ambitious Wilde. As for York, they gain a vastly experienced yet still in his prime forward, who will certainly create chances for his fellow forwards, and bring additional quality to their frontline. A big move in James’ career who will be hoping to gain promotion with York before his 2 year deal expires.
