As the summer transfer window looms, André Onana’s future at Manchester United is once again under scrutiny. Despite Monaco showing interest, the Cameroonian goalkeeper appears determined to stay put and prove himself to new boss Rúben Amorim. According to The Guardian, Onana is intent on remaining at Old Trafford and “proving his worth to Rúben Amorim next season.”

This defiance might be seen as admirable or delusional, depending on which part of last season fans choose to remember.

Patchy Form and Managerial Doubt

Onana’s debut season was riddled with inconsistency. Signed from Inter Milan in July 2023, the 29-year-old struggled with both form and focus. His errors were glaring, particularly in high-stakes fixtures. Amorim was forced to drop him after a dire 2-2 Europa League draw with Lyon, citing his culpability in both goals. Onana was absent for the following 4-1 drubbing by Newcastle, but reinstated in the return leg, where he did perform solidly in a dramatic 5-4 win.

Still, questions linger. Amorim has left the door open: “We are going to make that evaluation for any position in the squad,” he said. “Goalkeeper is the same; we can work with André. André Onana already proved he is a top player with Inter. We have some seasons where we are [all] underperforming.”

New Options on the Horizon

Monaco are not the only ones watching. Chelsea’s Djordje Petrović is also under the microscope, as the Ligue 1 club seek a long-term solution. Amorim may also be considering his own alternatives should Onana fail to convince during pre-season.

With financial pressures mounting and understudy Altay Bayindir expected to leave, United might need to sell before they buy. Onana, with three years left on his deal, could become a financial lever rather than a foundational piece.

Reputation on the Line

Onana’s resolve is clear. Whether his redemption arc can materialise at Old Trafford remains to be seen. What is certain is that Amorim won’t gamble his debut season on sentiment.

You want to believe in comebacks. You really do. But watching Onana last season tested even the most patient fan’s faith. The highs — like the second-leg fightback — came too late, and the lows were just too frequent. We all saw the Lyon game, we saw Newcastle put four past us. That’s not just rust, that’s a lack of command.

It’s telling that Amorim used words like “evaluation” and “underperforming”. Sounds diplomatic, but also like he’s already shopping. And who could blame him? Goalkeepers should bring calm, not chaos. Onana’s CV might boast of Champions League finals, but right now it’s about what you’re doing in the shirt. And his shirt was often the one picking the ball out of the net.

If Monaco or anyone wants him and the money helps rebuild, then maybe it’s the best for all parties. Just don’t let it become another situation where we hang onto someone too long hoping they’ll become the player they were somewhere else.

Right now, we need certainty. Onana isn’t that.
