Newcastle United fail in transfer bid to sign Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek

According to The Telegraph (Subscription Required), Newcastle United have had a bid to sign Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek rejected in the January transfer window. The Dutchman continues to struggle for regular game time at Old Trafford.

Newcastle are threatened by relegation at the moment and are desperate to add more quality in their attempt to survive the drop. They have already signed Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood and wanted to make Van de Beek their next addition with the prospect of signing him on loan.

However, to the Toons’ disappointment, the 24-year-old refused to join them after they had contacted him through intermediaries. Man United are not keen to trim the number of senior players in their squad. This played a part in the midfielder’s decision to pass on the chance of moving to St. James’ Park.

The Dutchman has been assured that he remains a part of Rangnick’s plans for the season, but a significant change is yet to be noted. The Magpies could try again in the latter stages of the winter transfer window, with Georginio Wijnaldum of Paris Saint-Germain another midfield option.

What next for Donny at Man Utd?

It remains to be seen if the Red Devils ace will see a turnaround in his game time at Old Trafford in the months to come. That is if he would not end up leaving in the coming days before the winter market closes down. Many had thought that his inspiring outing against Aston Villa in the FA Cup would have helped him gain a starting spot, but that has not been the case.

The Premier League fixture following that match was against Villa once again, but the Dutch international was left on the bench. The attacking midfielder came on as a substitute but, it would have been disappointing to see him m is out despite Scott McTominay’s absence.

You would feel for the Premier League star and what he has gone through since his move to Manchester. A promising player at Ajax Amsterdam, he has been a pale shadow of himself at Old Trafford and has in his defence been denied regular playtime. Whether better times lie ahead remains to be seen.

It would be best if the Dutch star is allowed to leave, but since we are involved in many competitions at the moment, it would not be wise to reduce our squad depth. As such, the German boss has to find a situation where the Dutchman can start making a case for himself to be included. After all, helping him regain the form that he had shown with Ajax would only help our chances of attaining success.
