Champions Manchester City have retooled over the summer and will be going all out to win a third successive Premier League title this season.
And will this be the year they finally get their hands on that elusive Champions League trophy?
In: Erling Haaland (Dortmund, £51.5m), Kalvin Phillips (Leeds, £42m), Stefan Ortega (Arminia Bielefeld, free)
Out: Raheem Sterling (Chelsea, £50m), Gabriel Jesus (Arsenal, £45m), Oleksandr Zinchenko (Arsenal, £30m), Romeo Lavia (Southampton, £12m), Gavin Bazunu (Southampton, £12m), Pedro Porro (Sporting CP, £7.2m), Darko Gyabi (Leeds, £5m), Ko Itakura (Borussia M’Gladbach, £4.5m), Aro Muric (Burnley, £2.5m), Fernandinho (Athletico-PR, free), Zack Steffen (Middlesbrough, loan), Yan Couto (Girona, loan)
Transfer balance: +£74.3m
They were already a brilliant team before they signed one of the top strikers in world football, but Erling Haaland’s arrival really could propel City into the stratosphere.
Pep Guardiola will be hoping Haaland finishes the chances which decide the tighter contests in his side’s favour, and ultimately gets them over the line in the Champions League.
But it could all depend on how quickly the Norwegian settles into English football, and whether he can stay relatively injury free.
Aside from the need to reshape the attack around Haaland, it should be business as usual for the champions in 2022/23.
Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Fernandinho have left, but the arrival of Julián Álvarez plus the signings Kalvin Phillips and Stefan Ortega have added extra depth to the squad and Guardiola has a plethora of options to choose from in almost every department.
If they can get a deal done for Brighton’s Marc Cucurella too, it will have been a near-perfect summer after which the balance sheet will still be looking very healthy.
Winning the Premier League is never easy but City are in a strong position to do so again, and should be considered pretty heavy favourites.
Many will once again judge them on their success in the Champions League, however, and whether they can finally win that one is anyone’s guess.
