Spurs Transfer News: Chelsea to offer Romelu Lukaku plus cash for Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane

In a surprising claim from Italian outlet CalcioMercatoWeb (h/t the Express), Chelsea boss Graham Potter could offer Tottenham Hotspur Romelu Lukaku plus cash in a bid to sign Harry Kane.

The newly-appointed Blues boss likes the England international and wants to bring him to Stamford Bridge. In return, Chelsea think the opportunity to reunite with Lukaku could entice manager Antonio Conte.

Lukaku was signed by the west Londoners in the summer of 2021 for a club-record fee of £97.5million. That deal, however, did not work out according to plan and the Belgium international was sent back to Inter on a season-long loan deal this summer.

The Blues signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from FC Barcelona in the closing stages of the recently-concluded transfer window. However, he is thought of as a short-term solution and Chelsea could move for a centre-forward in the near future.

An unthinkable prospect

If you ask a Spurs fan about such a deal, you would probably get a resounding ‘no’ from most of them. Lukaku has blown hot and cold during his spell in the Premier League.

He has arguably been an underwhelming presence in attack for the Blues during both his spells at SW6. He had a good time at Everton and West Bromwich Albion but then wasn’t always in form when playing for Manchester United.

Kane, on the other hand, is a proven PL goal-scorer. There is no denying that he is one of the greatest strikers this country has seen, and his record speaks for itself.

Kane is the third all-time leading goal-scorer in the history of the PL with 189 strikes to his name. Still 29, he has ample time to overtake Wayne Rooney’s tally of 208 and Alan Shearer’s record of 260 goals.

No point in fixing what isn’t broken. Conte has said he wants to extend Kane’s stay beyond the summer of 2024
