Aston Villa hold talks with Tottenham Hotspur target and Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte

Premier League rivals Aston Villa have ‘held talks’ with Tottenham Hotspur target and Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte, according to 90min (h/t Birmingham Live).

The Spaniard has fallen down the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium side in recent months. Ruben Dias, John Stone, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake have all been ahead of him in Pep Guardiola’s plans this season.

As a result, the 29-year-old is expected to part ways with the Sky Blues in the upcoming transfer window. To that end, Spurs, as well as the Villans, are interested in acquiring his services.

Laporte joined City in January 2018 and has been pivotal to their success over the last few campaigns. However, this term, he has made just 12 appearances in the league for them.

As a result, the centre-back is ‘looking to leave‘ the Etihad Stadium side this summer. The Sky Blues have placed a £40 million on the Spain international’s head.

Villa have done well since Unai Emery’s arrival in their dugout. The former Villarreal head coach has secured a place in the UEFA Europa Conference League for the Lions after a strong end to the season.

As for Tottenham, we struggled defensively in the 2022/23 campaign. Eric Dier and Cristian Romero were not reliable enough at the back for us. Clement Lenglet also left a lot to be desired on occasions.

Ben Davies played in central defence a lot once again. But the Welsh national is a full-back by trade. Davinson Sanchez was not trusted a lot by any of the managers in Spurs’ dugout.

Laporte has proven his quality in the English top flight. While Villa boast European football, in recent history, Tottenham have been the more successful club. Thus, what the future holds for the Spaniard remains to be seen.
