PL club grant permission for defender starlet to head to Thorp Arch next week – Leeds Sources
Football Insider
Chelsea have given the green light for Ashley Akpan to head to Leeds United next week after a delay in his planned trial, Football Insider can reveal.
The 15-year-old defender, who turns 16 next month, is wanted by Leeds and their fierce Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town.
A Leeds source has told Football Insider that Akpan will now arrive at their Thorp Arch headquarters for a trial next week rather than, as initially planned, this week.
This comes after Football Insider revealed that Akpan is a target for two of the Championship’s biggest clubs as he prepares to leave Chelsea.
He will be assessed at close quarters by the academy coaches of both clubs and is also likely to play in age-group matches.
He had appeared well placed to progress from schoolboy terms but he is now set to leave the club he first joined as a 10-year-old.
Akpan remains on Chelsea’s books for now but the club have granted him permission to find a new team and undergo any trials he arranges with his camp.
Capped by Poland at Under-15 level, the rising star is attractive to Championship clubs as he can play in midfield as well as his normal defender position.
The youngster is eligible to play for Nigeria and England as well as Poland.
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that attacking star will undergo Elland Road medical and join the club after agreeing personal terms.
