Villa secure massive win at the death

Tyrone Mings scored a stunning 95th minute winner to fire Aston Villa to a massive win over resurgent Watford in their relegation six-pointer from the second city.

Villa had more of the ball in this one in the opening half but paid for their lack of incisiveness or creativity when Watford bagged a big goal before the break.

Of all the players the Villa Park faithful didn’t want scoring, it was local boy Troy Deeney as the boyhood Birmingham City fan did the damage by thumping a header past Pepe Reina.

The Spaniard did deny Deeney in the second half with a smart double stop and that intervention proved all the more pivotal when substitute Douglas Luiz came on to level things.

He blasted in emphatically after a Matt Targett shot was saved and you could see how much it meant by his incredible celebration as he literally dove headfirst into the Holte End.

And those same fans were left in rapture come full time as a last gasp Ezri Konsa strike took a nick off a prone Tyrone Mings to sail into the net. Just the bit of luck they deserved.

Relentless De Bruyne delivers again

There are few things more certain on a Premier League matchday then Kevin De Bruyne assisting goals and he duly did so at Bramall Lane for the only goal of a feisty contest.

The big news from this one for the visitors was Aymeric Laporte’s return from injury after a 143-day lay-off but there were early concerns about him after Mo Bešić welcomed him back with a nasty late tackle.

Thankfully for City, he shrugged that off but it was a little harder to shrug off the frustration that came with Gabriel Jesus’ penalty miss after Riyad Mahrez had showed brilliant feet to win the spot kick.

That was the closest either side came in the first half and Pep Guardiola had to call upon Agüero after the interval to enter and save the day for his side as he has done so often.

But it was De Bruyne who claims much of the credit as his unstoppable pass to tee up the Argentine took his assist tally this season to 15 – nobody in Europe’s top five leagues has more.

In addition, he is also the first player in Premier League history to register at least 15 assists in three separate campaigns. A magician.

Lejeune buries Everton with stunning late show

Newcastle incredibly scored twice deep into injury time at Goodison Park to shock Everton and secure a smash and grab point.

It took half an hour of this one for the opener to arrive as Bernard, who had been a lively threat beforehand, did well to tee up Moise Kean to finally break his Everton duck.

The striker controlled in the area before beating Martin Dúbravka with an effort he perhaps should have saved as he got off the mark for the Toffees with his 26h shot in blue.

One man who isn’t having such difficult scoring is Dominic Calvert-Lewin and he marked his 100th top flight appearance by hitting double figures for the season.

That came when Lucas Digne slipped him in on 54 minutes and he swivelled smartly before picking out the far corner.

After 94 minutes, Florian Lejeune took a break from pondering methods for disposing of a dead body to pop in a casual overhead kick to set up a grandstand finish.

And they somehow managed to level when, in the mother of all goalmouth scrambles, the ball ended up in the back of Jordan Pickford’s net for a 96th minute equaliser thanks to Lejeune.

Wilson duo combine to blow Brighton away

A goal apiece from each of Bournemouth’s star Wilsons bookended an own goal as the Cherries finally ended their six-game winless run at Brighton’s expense.

Both sides knew the importance of this one and it was struggling Bournemouth who hit the front when a long ball forward wasn’t dealt with by the Brighton defence.

That allowed Dominc Solanke to pick out Harry Wilson in space and he made no mistake for his seventh goal of the season before things quickly got even better for the hosts.

Brighton couldn’t compose themselves and some woeful defending of a corner resulted in Callum Wilson wrestling the ball in off Pascal Groß for a rather unfortunate own goal.

If there were doubts about the England international’s claims on that goal, there were no such concerns when he made it three to finally end his long goal drought.

After a little luck went his way as the ball broke into his path, he rounded a static Maty Ryan and tap home for his first league goal since September, a wait of 1,319 minutes.

That rendered Aaron Mooy’s emphatic late volley to consolation status for the Seagulls.

Saints stars step up in Ings’ absence

The incredible turnaround from Southampton continued in London as they moved to within just three points of the European places with a win at Crystal Palace.

The Saints have been in excellent form lately, which made their loss to Wolves after going 2-0 up, and kept that going with a strong showing at Selhurst Park.

Despite resting star man Danny Ings, they managed to find goals from elsewhere as Nathan Redmond stepped up with his third of the season thanks to a bullet into the top corner.

The sharing of the scoring burden continued three minutes after the break when Stuart Armstrong bent a beauty in front range with a little help from the upright.
