What a weekend it was in the Premier League, full of goals, shocks and memorable moments.
And now it’s time to hand out our awards.
Tottenham needed their big players to step up and pull them out their five-match winless run, and that was exactly what captain Son Heung-min did in Sunday’s 4-1 rout of Newcastle.
The South Korean gave Magpies full-back Kieran Trippier a torrid time, dribbling past his former team-mate twice to set up the first two goals.
And it was Son who then wrapped up his side’s scoring from the penalty spot, taking his tally to 10 Premier League goals this season. It is the eighth consecutive campaign in which the 31-year-old has managed 10 or more goals.
It was a good weekend for fans of left-footed curlers, with Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva and Fulham’s Harry Wilson both providing beauties.
But the Goal of the Weekend has to go to Sheffield United’s James McAtee for his swish winning strike in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Brentford.
You simply don’t save those.
There was some incredibly stiff competition for this award this week. Bournemouth won 3-0 at Old Trafford, Fulham won 5-0 for the second consecutive match, Everton got their third win in a row to effectively wipe out their 10-point deduction, Liverpool went top of the league, while Tottenham and Manchester City both ended their winless runs.
But the award goes to Aston Villa, who pulled off their second 1-0 victory over a title contender in a week when they overcame Arsenal on Saturday, making it 15 consecutive league victories at Villa Park.
Unai Emery’s side had to hang in there for large portions of this match and were somewhat fortunate to see a late Kai Havertz equaliser disallowed for a questionable handball, but John McGinn’s early goal proved to be enough for another statement victory.
Only in 1980/81 – when the Villans last won the title – have they taken more points after 16 games of a top-flight season. They are in the title race, make no mistake about it.
Considering it had already happened three times this season before Saturday, Manchester United losing at home is no longer such a big surprise.
But the humiliating nature of this weekend’s 3-0 defeat at the hands of Bournemouth felt like a line in the sand. This side’s problems run deep, and time is running out for manager Erik ten Hag to prove that he is the man to solve them.
Take nothing away from Bournemouth though, who have grown significantly as a team under Andoni Iraola in recent weeks and were magnificent again here.
The Cherries took to the field full of confidence and pressed energetically, with Dominic Solanke dragging United’s back four all over the place with his clever movement, leaving space for his team-mates to exploit.
They were well worthy of their fourth win in their last five matches, and their first ever win at Old Trafford. United were lucky that a late goal from Dango Ouattara was ruled out for handball and the scoreline wasn’t even more embarrassing.
That defeat for United means they have now lost more Premier League home games since Sir Alex Ferguson retired (35) than they did during his 21 seasons in charge of the club.
On-fire Fulham, meanwhile, have scored 3+ goals in four successive top-flight league matches for the first time since October 1961.
And Harvey Elliott’s late winner for Liverpool at Crystal Palace on Saturday means they have now scored more winning goals (43) in the 90th minute or later than any other team in Premier League history.
Newcastle striker Callum Wilson wasn’t impressed with what he felt was a “lack of respect” shown by Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario during Sunday’s game.
“There’s a way to win isn’t there? We’ve seen it in the week when Everton were winning and Pickford was messing around,” Wilson told Sky Sports post-match.
“The goalkeeper, I’ve had a header, he starts pulling faces and messing around. It’s a lack of respect I thought. But I said my piece, we’re grown men and we move on.”
