Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang convinced by Marseille’s project

Foot Mercato report that Chelsea and Gabonese international attacker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is convinced by the project that has been offered to him by Ligue 1 side Marseille. Talks are ongoing to find a definitive agreement.

Following the arrivals of Geoffrey Kondogbia and Renan Lodi from Atlético Madrid, Marseille are pushing on with their summer transfer window business. They are now seeking to sign a centre-forward following the departure of Alexis Sánchez on a free transfer. The Chilean international had been offered a contract extension by OM, but this was subtly withdrawn after new boss Marcelino made clear that he did not feel that the former Manchester United and Arsenal forward’s style was best suited to the tactical direction that the Spaniard wishes to take the club in.

34-year-old Aubameyang is currently earning close to €180,000 a month with Premier League side Chelsea, but is willing to make considerable financial sacrifices to make a return to Ligue 1, which is where his professional career first took off in a major way, when he wore the green and white shirt of St Étienne.

Out of contract in June 2024 with the American-owned London outfit, Chelsea have made it clear to the player that he must find a jumping off point this summer. He has not been included in Chelsea’s pre-season tour squad that is travelling to the United States.

An agreement on personal terms between OM and Aubameyang is very close as of Monday evening – Marseille are likely set to hope that Chelsea allow the Gabon international to join them on a free transfer. However, their current focus is to find a salary agreement with the player before crossing that bridge.
