Qatar became the first ever host nation to lose their World Cup opener on Sunday as they went down to Ecuador.
Here are the best images from day one.
The opening ceremony sprung a surprise as veteran actor Morgan Freeman appeared on stage…
…as did a giant version of the World Cup trophy.
England boss Gareth Southgate confirmed that his side would still be taking a knee before kick off in their World Cup matches, taking a stand against racism.
Ecuador celebrated as Enner Valencia’s penalty put them 1-0 up…
…and after Ecuador had made it 2-0, the Qatar fans decided they’d had enough as the stands emptied even before half-time.
Meanwhile, the South American fans were enjoying their perfect start to the tournament, even if they had to do without any beer.
This guy must surely have been too hot, though.
Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie sported a USA themed haircut…
And Germany international Serge Gnabry had a new ‘do too.
Tomorrow sees England take on Iran, Senegal play Netherlands, and Wales face USA.
