Groups E and F took their bows on Wednesday with big games at every turn.
Here’s how day four of the World Cup looked.
Morocco and Croatia were first up this morning and played out the third goalless draw of the tournament so far.
It wasn’t a classic but Luka Modrić once again showed his class at the age of 37.
Next up Germany and Japan made their tournament debuts with the Blue Samurai producing one of the World Cup’s big shocks.
It was Takuma Asano who scored the winner with seven minutes to go, firing in from a tight angle over Manuel Neuer.
Cue wild celebrations from the Japanese players at the full time whistle.
Pedri and Gavi were both named in the starting XI as Spain played Costa Rica, making La Roja the first European nation to pick two teenagers in the same team in 60 years.
But it was Gavi who starred as the Barcelona man became the youngest player to score at a World Cup since Pele in 1958.
The final game of the day saw Canada return to the World Cup for the first time in 36 years as they face Belgium.
It was a night to forget for Alphonso Davies though, as despite playing well, he missed a penalty in their 1-0 defeat.
Tomorrow sees pre-tournament favourites Brazil join the party for an intriguing clash with Serbia.
