As we tick into the second week of the Qatar World Cup the twists and turns this tournament has provided continue to surprise fans around the globe.
Here are some of the best photos from matchday eight.
In the day’s first game Japan, fresh off their win over Germany took on a Costa Rica side seeking redemption after their mauling by Spain.
Despite their dominance, Japan were unable to find a way through both the Costa Rica defence and PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas.
In the end though, it was Costa Rica that would cause yet another shock as wing-back Keysher Fuller struck the winner with less than 10-minutes left on the clock.
This result blew Group E wide open hours before Germany put their tournament on the line against Spain.
The Golden Generation of Belgium, in the words of Kevin De Bruyne, are now too old to win the World Cup and Morocco exposed their cracks.
Walid Regragui’s side thought they had taken the lead on the stroke of half-time as Hakim Ziyech’s wicked free-kick evaded all, including Thibaut Courtois in goal.
…only for the goal to be ruled out for offside by VAR.
However, their pressure would tell and the goals Morocco’s play deserved would come as Chelsea outcast Ziyech was front and centre.
In Group F’s second fixture of the day, Canada got off to a blistering start as Alphonso Davies scored his nation’s first World Cup goal – the fastest so far in the competition this year.
Much like against Belgium, John Herdman’s side weren’t afraid to take the game to Croatia as Kamal Miller had words with 2018 Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modrić.
Andrej Kramarić got his side level, before adding his second and Croatia’s third in the second period, as Zlatko Dalić’s side came back to win 4-1.
This result saw Croatia leapfrog Morocco into top spot of their group, whilst Canada can book their flights home with a game to spare.
In the final game of the day, Germany were given some leeway after Japan’s shock defeat to Costa Rica, but Manuel Neuer had to roll back the years early into their clash with Spain as flicked Dani Olmo’s powerful effort onto the crossbar.
An exciting game from a tactical point of view saw few chances created at either end until both managers decided on a change of approach, with Alváro Morata coming on to break the deadlock.
If something works well, it’s fair to say you may inspire others as Hansi Flick brought on Niclas Füllkrug with the 29-year-old finding a late leveller.
All the drama of the World Cup returns tomorrow as Groups G and H are in action.
