Cameroon went out with a bang as they beat Brazil, whilst Switzerland’s journey continues after a feisty clash with Serbia.
Here are the best photos from day 13 at the 2022 World Cup.
We kicked off proceedings with a mouth-watering re-match of the 2010 World Cup quarter-final between Ghana and Uruguay.
As history attempted to repeat itself, André Ayew was given a golden chance to put Ghana ahead from the penalty spot, but his tame effort – which may have been going wide – was easily saved.
Luis Suárez, the only player from either side to have started that match in 2010, played centre stage once more, although in a slightly different fashion, as he played a crucial role in Uruguay’s two goals.
Uruguay would be denied a spot in the next round due to “goals scored” as tempers boiled over with referee Daniel Siebert confronted at full-time after his decision not to award La Celestea a second-half penalty.
Their despair was starkly contrasted by South Korea, who had waited on the field for confirmation that they had qualified.
The evening started perfectly for Portugal as, on his World Cup debut, Ricardo Horta gave them the lead.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who had an off-night by his high standards, provided an inadvertent assist for the equaliser on the half-hour mark.
Before Wolves striker Hwang Hee-chan came off the bench to seal the victory in added time.
In the day’s later games, a much-changed Brazil side (who had already secured their place in the next round) faced their first shot on target of the World Cup and Ederson was up to the task.
Despite dominating and creating multiple chances, it was Cameroon that would steal a famous victory as Vincent Aboubakar scored a late header.
…before being shown a second yellow card for removing his shirt as the Indomitable Lions went out with a bang.
And finally, Switzerland took on Serbia in a match that delivered the kind of bite that we all expected.
First-half goals from Aleksandar Mitrović and Dušan Vlahović threatened to shock the group and gave Switzerland a scare.
But, scoring in his fifth consecutive international tournament, Xherdan Shaqiri was instrumental as he played a part in all three goals to push Switzerland to qualify.
