Morocco and France will meet in the World Cup semi-final after seeing off Portugal and England respectively in Saturday’s quarter-finals.
Here is the story of the day in pictures.
Cristiano Ronaldo was once again dropped to the bench as Portugal took on Morocco, but lots of camera lenses were still trained on the 37-year-old during the national anthems.
A coming together between Bruno Fernandes and Bono ended with the Morocco goalkeeper holding the Portugal star in what might have been mistaken for a loving embrace. You could say Bruno was stuck in a moment that he couldn’t get out of.
The deadlock was broken in that game by an incredible leap from Morocco’s Youssef En-Nesyri which left Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa and defender Rúben Dias floundering.
Ronaldo came off the bench in the second half and made a little bit of history by earning his 196th cap to equal the all-time men’s international record.
But the 37-year-old couldn’t inspire a Portugal comeback, and he left the field in tears at full-time.
While for Morocco, the only tears were tears of joy as they pulled off another incredible victory against the odds to march into the semi-finals.
Aurélien Tchouaméni gave Les Bleus the lead in the first half with a brilliant strike from range which had goalkeeper Jordan Pickford grasping at thin air. Not bad for his first World Cup goal.
Harry Kane’s appeal for a penalty in the first half fell on deaf ears.
But Kane’s and England’s fortunes changed when they were awarded a penalty in the second half for a clear Tchouaméni foul on Bukayo Saka.
The England captain made no mistake from 12-yards to equalise on the night, and equal Wayne Rooney’s all-time goalscoring record for the Three Lions.
Harry Maguire went agonisingly close to giving England the lead.
But just moments after Pickford had made a big save to prevent Olivier Giroud putting France back in front, Giroud did make it 2-1 when he headed home from Antoine Griezmann’s cross.
There was to be another twist as almost immediately after falling behind, England were awarded a second penalty, this time for a Theo Hernández foul on Mason Mount.
Kane stepped up again with the chance to become England’s all-time leading goalscorer.
But this time he blazed his spot-kick over the bar.
Marcus Rashford had one final chance to equalise for England deep into stoppage time, but his free-kick went just over the bar.
So England’s World Cup dream ended in heartbreaking fashion.
