Kevin Phillips fears there is “no way back” for Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group despite their ‘positive’ talks with supporters trust Spirit of Shankly.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa and England striker applauded Reds chiefs for acknowledging “they were in the wrong” but insisted there is still a long way to go to rebuild trust.

FSG have come under intense criticism and scrutiny since their attempt to sign Liverpool up to the European Super League last month.

Liverpool’s supporters union Spirit of Shankly held ‘positive’ talks with club chief executive Billy Hogan on Tuesday as they sought assurances and change on a number of key issues.

The group have confirmed that Hogan, on behalf of FSG, ‘agreed there is a need for a new structure leading to meaningful and lasting supporter engagement.’

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of the meeting, Phillips said: “I always say, actions speak louder than words.

“It is great that they have actually met them and I am sure both parties aired their views. At least these owners have acknowledged that they were in the wrong.

“It is good and definitely a step in the right direction, even if it is baby steps. It is important that they build a relationship to try and take the club forward.

“But sometimes when you have done something, there is no way back. This meeting will hopefully be a chance for the owners to try and make up for what they did but there is no guarantee that they can.”
