West Ham striker Sebastien Haller showed his frustration by not celebrating his goal against Sheffield United, according to Kevin Phillips.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the 2000 European Golden shoe winner claimed the Hammers’ record signing was sending an “emotional” message to David Moyes after bearing the brunt of intense fans’ criticism online.

Haller scored the only goal of the game against the Blades with a stunning 20-yard right-foot strike, the only time he has scored outside the box for the Irons.

The Ivory Coast international showed no emotion when the ball hit the back of the net before being surrounded by his teammates.

It was Haller’s second Premier League goal of the season and his first since being entrusted to lead the line in Michail Antonio’s absence.

“He is probably frustrated,” Phillips told Football Insider.

“There is probably all sorts of emotion. He will read the press, he is not daft and it is in your face 24/7.

“People saying he has not done enough or he can do better. It looks to me like it is frustration and it might be a message to David Moyes.

“There will certainly be something behind it because when you score a goal like that, even with no fans, you cannot help yourself. You would celebrate.”

Haller has started West Ham’s last three games up front as Michail Antonio has been absent with a hamstring injury.

The 30-year-old almost made the bench against the Blades and could return when Aston Villa visit the London Stadium on Monday night.
