Philippe Clement claims Rangers defender Borna Barisic is ‘hungry’…

If one thing stood out (and many did) about Friday’s press conference with Rangers manager Philippe Clement it was the generally sombre tone. It was possibly the least hopefully most uninspired presser yet, filled with borderline negativity and absolutely no good news at all.

The closest to ‘good’ news we got was the latest round of Ridvan Yilmaz being 50/50 for the weekend, which we’ll class as a ‘no’ quite honestly, but that was as good as it got.

Indeed, to add to the general malaise coming from the boss, he was asked about left back Borna Barisic, whose heart and soul has been away from Ibrox for as long as two years.

Widely-regarded as the least-interested player at the club and a cert to leave in a few weeks, the manager defied all logic with a Pedro-esque take on him, when he said:

“There have been reports for months about a lot of players and a lot of things. As long as nothing is official and I see the right things in the training and the dressing room, players are selectable. Borna will be in the selection from what I have seen until now. If he steps into the building tomorrow with another mindset that is something else. I don’t believe so. I see somebody who is serving this club already a long time and is really hungry for more titles and more trophies.”

The first few sentences are pretty grim – it’s close to a concession that Barisic will be leaving, but the final comment really is delusion or fabrication or ‘Pedroism’ to the nth degree.

If there’s one player who couldn’t be less hungry for more titles and trophies or the club in general it’s Borna – he’s been AWOL mentally since about February 2022 and that horror Old Firm at Parkhead, and his Rangers race has been run since then.

But Clement of course can’t say that. He can’t say ‘yeah he couldn’t give a crap any more, we’ll just have to figure a way around his passionless disinterest and likely departure in a few weeks’.

We’ll not be unfair on the manager, but he does go a little bit blue tinted specs with the piffle he comes out with, the overly-positive attempts at propaganda, seeing the best in everything.

And we can’t really see much best in anything with regards Barisic.

It’s time for him to move on, and it seems he has.
