The Philadelphia Union have acquired defender Abasa Aremeyaw as a free agent, the club announced Thursday.

The 18-year-old Ghanaian center-back has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Union, with club options on third and fourth years. Aremeyaw last represented MSK Zilina B in Slovenia's second tier, making seven appearances, while he also turned out four times for Zilina's senior team.

“Abasa is a promising young player who has the physique and skill to develop into a contributor in our back line,” Philadelphia sporting director Ernst Tanner said in a club press release. “His demonstrated ability to make an impact on set plays, combined with his speed and agility, makes him a good fit in the strong defensive system we have built. We look forward to integrating him into the team.”

Aremeyaw's signing comes shortly after the arrival of defensive midfielder Richard Odada from Serbian giants Red Star Belgrade. He will serve alongside Jakob Glesnes and Jack Elliott at center-back for the Union.

Jim Curtin's side currently sit top of the Eastern Conference after 23 regular-season games and travel to FC Cincinnati on Saturday looking to protect a five-game winning streak.
