Wrexham’s rise from the National League to the Championship has been one of the biggest feel-good stories of the past few seasons.

Co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have transformed the club’s fortunes since their takeover in 2021.

They have made no secret of their desire to drive Wrexham into the Premier League and have backed those aims with significant cash this summer.

The club has spent more than £20 million on new signings with a view to winning their fourth consecutive promotion.

However, they have collected just one point from their first three games in the Championship. As reality checks go, that is a pretty stern one.

Given the club’s ambitions, manager Phil Parkinson could be forgiven for feeling a little uncomfortable at the moment.

Parkinson’s career record in the Championship does not read well. He has won just 26 out of 144 games at that level.

Despite demonstrating an eagerness to paint a positive narrative around the club, Reynolds and McElhenney have shown they are willing to be ruthless.

Several players who have played a key role in the rise up the leagues have been ditched in favour of new signings.

Striker Paul Mullin’s exit this summer highlights that sentiment plays no part in the club’s thinking.

While it is too early to suggest that Parkinson should be sacked, he may not get his Hollywood ending with Wrexham if results don’t improve.
