Phil Foden will be hoping to become a Manchester City and England regular next season.
But England U-21 boss doesn’t think those things will come too soon.
Foden scored a superb goal in England’s 2-1 defeat to France at the U-21 European Championships last week but was only a sub in the 4-2 loss to Romania.
Now, Boothroyd has told reporters that he doesn’t expect to see Foden in the senior squad when next season begins.
“I think his next three to six months will be an indicator of where he gets to and what he is ready for internationally,” the U-21 boss said in a press conference.
“But, right now, September-time, I’d imagine he’ll be with me.”
Foden may have something to say about that, having seen his peers Jadon Sancho and Callum Hudson-Odoi break into the England team during the past year.
Should the midfielder start the season well with Manchester City, it will be very difficult for Gareth Southgate to overlook him.
