Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has revealed that Phil Foden sustained an injury during the derby defeat to Manchester United.

The England international forward was left out of the Manchester City matchday squad that secured victory over Wolves on Sunday afternoon, with the official line from the club being that Foden was ‘not fully fit’ for the contest.

Foden’s absence was arguably not felt, as a sublime performance from Erling Haaland inspired City to back-to-back victories, with the Norway international scoring his fourth Premier League hat-trick in a 3-0 home win.

However, further detail concerning Phil Foden’s omission from the City squad was provided in the aftermath of the contest, with Pep Guardiola providing an update on the young talent’s fitness in a crucial month for the squad.

Speaking to broadcasters, Pep Guardiola revealed that Phil Foden had sustained a foot problem during the 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford last week, with the issue re-appearing in the build-up to the contest against Wolves this weekend.

Guardiola revealed that on the advice of medical staff at the club, Phil Foden was told to rest and subsequently was kept out of the matchday squad picked to face Julen Lopetegui’s side, with Cole Palmer taking his place among the substitutes.

“He jumped with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and had a problem with his foot,” Guardiola said. “It has been a bit up and down and is a little bit uncomfortable, so we decided with the doctors to rest it. We’ll see if he arrives against Arsenal.”

Ahead of the FA Cup fourth round contest with Arsenal on Friday night, Guardiola was unable to offer any guarantees as to whether Foden will be deemed fit for the contest, but the week’s rest could provide him with plenty of time to build fitness.

Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Wolves at the weekend moved the club within just two points of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table, with Mikel Arteta’s side having two games in hand – the first of which comes against Manchester United.
