Peru, Colombia, and Chile all had a chance to stay alive in their hopes of going to Qatar but Peru took full advantage of having their fate in their own hands.

On Tuesday night, Peru clinched fifth place and will represent Conmebol in the inter-confederation play-off after they defeated Paraguay 2-0.

Peru will travel to Qatar to play on June 13th or 14th and face the AFC Fourth Round winner, who will either be Australia or the United Arab Emirates. They will only play a single game.

A fifth-minute goal by Benevento star striker Gianluca Lapadula set the tone while a rare goal from Yoshi Yotún gave the home side a much-needed two-goal cushion just before half-time.

With Colombia going ahead of Venezuela early on in the second half, the pressure was on Peru to hold onto their lead and did so quite comfortably, allowing their country to begin the celebrations that will surely go long into the night.

In 2018, Peru also needed to go through the inter-confederation play-off to clinch their first World Cup berth since 1982, defeating New Zealand 2-0 over two legs.
