The Athletic’s piece about David Datro Fofana is basically one full of hope.

It runs through his story from signing for Chelsea until now, and sees an upwards trend.

After a dreadful first half of the season with Union Berlin, Fofana has settled in much better at Burnley, where he’s started scoring and is proving the Clarets with a proper chance of survival if he’s able to keep up his form.

But the piece also documents some of the bad moments that have had some people questioning whether Fofana really has the mentality for the very top.

He famously fell out with his coach in Berlin, refusing to shake Urs Ficher’s hand after being subbed off against Napoli. But this piece reveals his problems extend to timekeeping too. Apparently “punctuality and attendance at training were persistent problems.” That’s shocking. If there’s one thing you expect from a footballer trying to break into the big time, it’s attending training.

If gets worse – “one late arrival meant he even missed the meeting in which the squad were informed of Fischer’s sacking in December.”

That’s just bad luck, but one can see why Union were as happy as Fofana and Chelsea to end the loan the moment the window opened.
