Real Madrid needed penalties to overcome Valencia in the Supercopa de España and reach the final in Saudi Arabia.
Scorers: Benzema (PEN) 39′; Lino 46′ (Real Madrid/Valencia win 4-3 on penalties)
Real Madrid started well and went close early when Karim Benzema just missed the target after a surging run before Federico Valverde did similar with a blistering strike from range.
The Real captain was then brought down in the area shortly before half-time following a clumsy challenge from behind and he picked himself up to convert from the penalty spot.
But Los Blancos were caught cold moments after the half-time restart as their defence was caught ball-watching a deep cross to the back post where Samuel Lino met it with a first time volley into the corner.
No further goals followed, despite a hefty seven minutes of added time too, leading to extra-time being required after Vinícius Júnior missed a huge chance to win it at the death.
He again went close after play resumed, as did Toni Kroos whose stinging low drive brought a good save out of Giorgi Mamardashvilli, who was matched by a huge block from Thibaut Courtois at the other end, leading to penalties.
In the shootout, Eray Cömert blazed over for Valencia and José Gayà had his penalty saved as Karim Benzema, Luka Modrić, Toni Kroos and Marco Asensio all netted to secure the win for Real, who scored each of their spot-kicks.
They will face Barcelona or Real Betis in Sunday’s final.
