Pep Guardiola endured one of his worst nights as a manager this weekend as Manchester City were thrashed by Tottenham.

Spurs cut apart the champions on the counter to record a stunning 4-0 win at the Etihad, equalling the biggest defeat of Guardiola’s coaching career. It continued a torrid run of form for the Citizens, who have now lost five consecutive games in all competitions.

Following their latest setback, we’ve remembered five of Guardiola’s worst defeats as Manchester City manager.

Pep Guardiola’s worst defeats as Manchester City manager

Barcelona 4-0 Manchester City – Champions League (2016)

Guardiola endured a miserable return to his former club as Lionel Messi inspired Barcelona to a big win at the Camp Nou. Messi opened the scoring on 17 minutes after a slip from Fernandinho and the visitors capitulated after the break. Kevin De Bruyne at fault as Messi scored his second, after giving away possession cheaply.

Things went from bad to worse for City when Claudio Bravo was sent off against his former club for handling outside the area. Messi completed his hat-trick as Barcelona extended their lead before substitute goalkeeper Willy Caballero saved a late Neymar penalty to prevent a fourth. However, Neymar was not to be denied for long as the Brazilian put the finishing touch on an emphatic win for the Spaniards.

Everton 4-0 Manchester City – Premier League (2017)

Guardiola’s debut season at Manchester City was punctuated by teething issues and an embarrassment at Everton showed the work to be done at the Etihad. The Toffees surrendered 71% of the possession to the visitors but were clinical at Goodison Park.

Romelu Lukaku and Kevin Mirallas combined for the first two goals, with the latter setting up Lukaku for the opener before the favour was repaid just two minutes after half-time. Tom Davies dinked in a third for the home side and Ademola Lookman fired in a fourth late on. Guardiola conceded his side’s title hopes were ‘over’ after a loss that left City 10 points off the pace.

Liverpool 3-0 Manchester City – Champions League (2018)

Manchester City broke records in 2017/18 to win the Premier League title with 100 points, becoming English football’s first centurions. However, Guardiola’s side saw their European hopes ended by a Liverpool side who finished the campaign 25 points behind them domestically.

A first-half blitz saw Jurgen Klopp’s side open up an unassailable advantage, as City wilted in front of a raucous Anfield. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring on 12 minutes before an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain blast doubled Liverpool’s lead just eight minutes later. It was three before half-time when Sadio Mane headed home from Salah’s cross.

A shell-shocked City were unable to recover and exited Europe after losing the second leg 2-1 at the Etihad.

Manchester City 2-5 Leicester City – Premier League (2020)

Leicester moved to the top of the Premier League table after a five-star performance to beat Guardiola’s side at the Etihad.

Jamie Vardy scored a hat-trick as the Foxes recovered from a goal down to humiliate their hosts at the Etihad. After Riyad Mahrez had opened the scoring against his former team, Vardy levelled from the penalty spot and scored a second from Timothy Castagne’s cross.

He completed his treble with another spot-kick before James Maddison got in on the act with a fourth. Nathan Ake reduced the deficit but it was Leicester who had the last laugh as Youri Tielemans scored a fifth with the visitor’s third penalty of the game.

Manchester City 0-4 Tottenham – Premier League (2024)

The numbers make for grim reading for Manchester City.

Spurs swept aside the champions to claim a 4-0 win at the Etihad on Saturday evening, with James Maddison on target twice for the visitors. City could not deal with Spurs, who baited in their hosts before launching terrific transitions.

Maddison’s double put the North London side in control as he combined beautifully with Dejan Kulusevski and Heung-min Son. Pedro Porro slammed in a third against his former team and Brennan Johnson put the gloss on the win from close range. City were second-best in the challenge, off the pace in midfield and littered with individual errors.

It was City’s worst home league defeat since losing 5-1 to Arsenal 21 years ago, while Guardiola’s side are the first top-flight champions to lose five games in a row in all competitions since Chelsea in March 1956.
