Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has sent Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk a message.

In the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park last weekend, Van Dijk injured his knee. It was announced after the match that the Dutchman would require surgery.

In a recent press conference, Guardiola wished Van Dijk all the best in terms of his recovery.

Guardiola added that the Premier League is better when the best players are available for selection.

“I cannot speak about how it will affect Liverpool. Jurgen can talk about this,” Guardiola said, as quoted by the Daily Star.

“We wish him to get well soon and have a good recovery. I don’t like opponents losing important players for a long time.

“I don’t know him but he looks strong so he’s going to come back well. We’ll wait for him to come back – the Premier League is better with good players and he is one of the best.

“Get well soon and all the best for him, his family and all.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Guardiola might be the manager of a rival club, but that has not stopped him showing his class.

Guardiola did not need to wish Van Dijk all the best, but we appreciate that he went to the effort to do so.

Guardiola is a fan of Van Dijk going by reports. Guardiola tried to sign Van Dijk from Southampton back in 2018. However, the Dutchman opted to join Liverpool instead.

Despite the fact that Van Dijk reportedly turned down the Citizens, Guardiola clearly holds no grudge, as he did wish the centre-back all the best with his rehabilitation.
