Pep Guardiola: Remembering Man City boss' strange outburst at Nathan Redmond

Pep Guardiola is an intense manager.

That, clearly, is quite the understatement but one of the most fascinating aspects of his management is the juxtaposition between his relentless and cerebral pursuit of glory alongside the beauty his teams are so often associated with.

Indeed, that was on display during Manchester City's Champions League victory over RB Leipzig earlier this week, with the Spaniard seemingly berating Jack Grealish and Riyad Mahrez on the pitch for their lax defensive work.

Still, Guardiola's ranting and raving isn't always confined to his own players.

Following a dramatic late win over Southampton in 2017, Guardiola was seen shouting at Nathan Redmond after originally embracing him after the final whistle.

As the two walked off the pitch, the City boss appeared to, not only push the Saints star, but shout in his face in what just generally looked like an unpleasant affair.

Of course, the conversation went viral at the time and sparked a huge amount of social media reaction. It's not often, after all, you get to see a manager so up close and personal with a rival player.

What made it stranger was that Guardiola didn't appear to have much of a problem with Redmond. Rather than react to a perceived wrongdoing during the match, he was merely urging the player to improve his game after being impressed with his ability.

Of the incident, Redmond said (via The Guardian): "He commented on my qualities as a young English player and how we wanted me to attack his team more during the game, in a similar way to last season."

“I told him I was doing what my manager had asked me to do in the game. That’s it. Nothing more, nothing less. Nothing negative or offensive was said towards me from Pep and that’s what makes him one of the best managers in world football.”
