Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on Spanish midfielder Rodri for his consistent performances for club and country, recognising him as a genuine contender to lift this year’s Ballon d’Or award.

Rodri played a crucial role in City’s historic fourth Premier League triumph last season. He also made individual history by surpassing Paolo Maldini and Demetrio Albertini’s record of 73 matches unbeaten, further enforcing his contribution to City’s recent success.

Furthermore, the defensive midfielder was selected as one of the best midfielders in the league and was therefore also included in the Premier League team of the season. Meanwhile, his performances in Germany for Spain were equally as impressive.

The 28-year-old was voted as the Player of the Tournament, further boosting his chances of winning the decorated Ballon d’Or award later this year. Addressing the media ahead of Man City’s pre-season match against Celtic, Guardiola praised Rodri for his accomplishments, and believes he is rightly in contention to win the award.

He said: “I can’t deny how happy I would be if Rodri could get the Ballon d’Or. His consistency is just brutal.

“Being in the race, being nominated, or winning the Ballon d’Or is fantastic!”

The Spaniard faces competition from Real Madrid duo Jude Bellingham and Vinícius Jr, who also had standout campaigns this year.
