Manchester City face a tough fixture today against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium. The FA Cup quarter-final fixture is a crucial match in Manchester City’s season. Following today’s match Pep Guardiola and his team will take on Leicester City at the Etihad in another crucial Premier League fixture. But as Pep Guardiola’s side faces a battle to qualify for the Champions League and progress in the FA Cup there is a change coming to the Manchester City squad.
The world champions began the rebuild of their squad in January. That process is set to continue at the end of the season. A host of Manchester City’s heroes will likely leave the club in the summer. But Pep Guardiola isn’t concerned about this just yet. He remains solely focused on his team achieving their goals for the remainder of this season.
Speaking during his pre-game press conference ahead of today’s FA Cup quarter-final against Bournemouth Guardiola was asked specifically about the future of Jack Grealish. The Manchester City manager refused to be drawn into the discussion about the future of the England international. Instead, he remains focused on Bournemouth and Leicester. When asked about the future of Grealish Guardiola said: “I’m not going to talk individually what happens in the future. The future is Bournemouth and after Leicester. Individually, I’m sorry, I’m not involved. When we are already winning the Premier League, we don’t have any more titles to fight, I understand completely.
“They can do it privately with the club, it’s fine, but I’m not involved, I don’t want to be involved because we are here to do our job and try to get Man City to win games, that’s what we have to do.”
All that matters for Pep Guardiola is today’s match against Bournemouth. That is the focus of Guardiola’s attention. There is still plenty to play for in what has been a disappointing season for his team. But if City can progress in the FA Cup and secure Champions League qualification they will salvage something from the season. That’s the main goal for Pep Guardiola rather than worrying about what will come in the summer.
There is no doubt that the Manchester City hierarchy will be busy planning for the summer. That planning will include who will arrive at the club as well as who will depart. But for now, matters on the pitch take precedence. The comments from Pep Guardiola highlight this fact.
