Pep Guardiola insists that Manchester City need to trim their squad before the transfer window closes in September.
Guardiola’s side beat Wolves 4-0 thanks to goals from Erling Haaland, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki in their first game of the 2025/26 Premier League season.
City did not win the league for the first time in five years last season but they will be hoping to win the title again this season.
Cherki, Reijnders and Rayan Ait-Nouri have all been brought into the club this summer and now Guardiola says he wants to trim his squad.
When asked if he wanted to sign more players the Spaniard said: “No, we have too many people, too many players.
“Phil Foden was injured, Kovacic is out he will be back, Savinho will be back as well as Josko Gvardiol and look at the bench. You have Ake and Gundogan.
“I like a deeper squad to compete in all competitions but I don’t want to leave players at home, I don’t want it.
“It’s not healthy, you cannot create a good vibe, a good atmosphere when everyone has to feel that they can’t play, I can’t compete with my teammates.”
Savinho has been linked with a move to Tottenham and reports suggest that he wants to leave the club. Ederson was unavailable for the Citizens, and he too has been linked with a move away from the club. Guardiola said: “If a player wants to leave he has to leave, but on the conditions of the club.
“The owner signed that player, we paid the other club for the player and when they are here it is our conditions but I don’t want to keep someone that is not happy here.
“I have always said that since I was at Barcelona but the final decison, the one that makes the deal is always to the club, not to me.
“I don’t know what is going to happen in the next two weeks.”
