Pep Guardiola has revealed that Manchester City were “concerned” about John Stones’ recent call-up for England.

The centre-back was a surprise inclusion during his country’s recent encounters with Australia and Italy despite only returning from injury before the international break.

Stones played 22 minutes in the Premier League champions’ defeat to Arsenal, something which his manager admits was a concern in talks with Gareth Southgate.

“We were a little bit concerned. We spoke with Gareth, we have an incredible relationship,” revealed Guardiola.

“We were concerned because Stones didn’t play one minute in the last two months and then to play for the national team.

“He was so important and we could not use him. We’re happy he got minutes but what if he gets injured? So he plays some minutes and comes off.

“They love to play for their countries I never say not go there, but if a player plays few few minutes we are concerned.

“But thankfully, everything was right and he’s ready for next games.”

City will be aiming to return to winning ways when they entertain Brighton on Saturday as they sit third in the table.
