Olympique de Marseille director of football Medhi Benatia spoke to La Provence in an interview ahead of Les Olympiens’ must-win fixture against Ligue 1’s bottom side in Montpellier this evening (21:05 CET). The former Juventus and Bayern Munich defender explosively railed against what he believes as “people at the club are trying to cause trouble.” “What’s happening in Marseille is history repeating itself. That’s new to me. I’ve never experienced that, not at Udinese, not at Juve, not at Bayern, not even at Clermont-Ferrand or Tours in Ligue 2…” said Benatia, who was promoted to the club’s director of football in January after a spell of being Pablo Longoria’s sporting advisor. “I’ve never seen an environment where, when things aren’t going well on the pitch, people inside the club try to stir up trouble! I’ve never experienced that! People think it’s normal, but I call it mediocrity,” revealed Benatia. Benatia’s interview comes just after reports from L’Équipe that Roberto de Zerbi is considering moving his squad to a new base-camp, potentially in Italy, to get away from the noise at the Commanderie for the remaining four games of the season. The goal has been clearly stated by all at the club: Champions League qualification at all costs to avoid a potential disaster. GFFN | George Boxall
