João Gomes and Lázaro (aged 21 and 20 respectively) both shone in midfield for the Mengão, leading Sousa to stress how important these emerging stars will be in terms of his side’s ambitions this year.

“I always talk about the importance of all the boys in the squad, especially when they train well, dedicate themselves, are concentrated, have more chances to play,” Sousa after the game.

“The process is intuitive in the way we train and read the game itself, their moments in training determine decision-making during games.

“Congratulations to everyone and to those who read the game from the bench, realised what had to be done.”

Gomes and Lázaro will now have to hope they did enough to earn a starting spot in Wednesday’s juicy league encounter with Palmeiras.
