With the tension at Flamengo seemingly at an all-time high, the silence will be broken this Saturday after the match against Goiás at the Maracanã.

After controversy and a public exchange of barbs between manager Paulo Sousa and goalkeeper Diego Alves, the Portuguese manager will speak alongside Marcos Braz and Bruno Spindel in a joint statement in order to clarify the matter.

Following Tuesday’s Copa Libertadores win over Universidad Católica, Sousa said that the goalkeeper had ‘made himself available’ to play in a conversation with Spindel, the executive director of football.

Diego Alves, still injured, ended up not even being on the bench for the clash.

However, at the Flamengo complex on Wednesday, an irate Diego Alves told people around him that Sousa’s claims were completely false.

To make matters worse, on Thursday, journalist Eric Faria claimed that Sousa had ‘commissioned’ the question about the goalkeeper to be asked at the press conference, with the aim of publicly exposing him.

Adding to the drama, Sousa’s advisor issued a note demanding a public retraction from the journalist and threatened to sue him.
