Paul Scholes bemoans David De Gea and Harry Maguire errors as Man Utd crash out of the Europa League | OneFootball

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has criticised David De Gea and Harry Maguire for their costly mistakes at Sevilla tonight.

Sevilla beat United 3-0 to advance into the semi-finals of the Europa League, but they got a big helping hand from Man United.

For the first goal, De Gea gave a risky pass to Maguire. Sevilla’s aggressive press pounced and Youssef En-Nesyri opened the scoring.

It was a disastrous start from the Red Devils that only got worse. Loic Bade doubled Sevilla’s lead, heading home from a corner kick.

De Gea then gave the ball away outside his box to hand En-Nesyri another clearcut opportunity that he gladly took.

Scholes says both players should have done better under pressure and praised Sevilla’s approach to the clash.

Speaking on BT Sport, Paul Scholes said (via Manchester Evening News): “Just get rid of it. Clear your lines.

“I can only think of one centre-half in world football who would want the ball in that position and be able to handle it. Harry Maguire is not one of them.

“David de Gea can see that – he can see that there’s three men around him, and he isn’t comfortable in that position. We saw how hostile that crowd were before the game.

“They’ve been so aggressive and so against Manchester United that you’ve got to give them credit, but as I said, in the warm-up, we were eulogising about how impressive and how hostile the crowd was.

“So when the players see that they have to go into that dressing room and think ‘right, I’ve got to be ready for this, my first touch has got to be ready’.

“You see Jadon Sancho in the first five minutes – the ball bounced off him three times. He had a terrible weight of pass.

“I’m a big fan of the lad, but you’ve got to liven up – you’ve got to be ready. They just weren’t ready.”

Man United manager Erik ten Hag will be unhappy with how his makeshift defence capitulated in Spain tonight.

Despite the absence of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane, the individual errors were too much at this level.

Sevilla had more grit and wanted the win more, and the individual errors from United’s backline handed the tie to the Andalusians.

United are now out of the Europa League and will focus all their efforts on the FA Cup and Premier League.

They face in-form Brighton & Hove Albion in the cup this weekend. The winners will meet either Manchester City or Sheffield United in the final.
